Jobberknoll Worldbuilding
Oct. 2nd, 2011 10:01 amOMG you guys. Not a day goes past right now when I don't get an email with another tantalising bit of "here's some backstory for my character", or "we want to do this for the world, can we?" or "I'm going to app, but my backstory document is TEN THOUSAND WORDS now."
I love every single one of you.
But maybe it's time to do some serious colloborative world building? And by that I mean, a dump post in which people can put things that they've created that effect other people, so we can have a happy and fun collaborative playing in the sandbox.
No priority to anyone, here. If it's awesome, and it doesn't conflict with what someone else has one, I say go for it!

Since the war
Date: 2011-10-02 02:03 pm (UTC)Nottingham and Sherwood
Date: 2011-10-02 06:36 pm (UTC)Sherwood Forest is an old magical site with a lot of secrets that many people who aren't from the area don't get to know. Will Scarlett is trusted by Robin Hood and will work for him as soon as she graduates and is working for him as much as he can. Though he's still in school, he's one of the representatives for Nottingham in the Order. Bad things are happening and I plan on fleshing them out more but this is the basics.
A few people in Hogwarts know some of what's going on in Nottingham because Will trusts them enough or they've been paying attention. Mainly though it seems like Nottingham is beset more by Muggle than Wizarding troubles. This is also very much a work in progress.

Date: 2011-10-03 01:46 am (UTC)If your character's family has any hint of power, politic, financial or whatever, this family will seem familiar. Think of them as the Rockerfellers of the wizarding world. If your character studies more than the surface layer of the history of the wizarding world, they will know of this family.

Date: 2011-10-02 02:24 pm (UTC)It will likely be like every three weeks across a Friday and Saturday night, so that all players in all countries can be involved.
Random details on the bar. There are anti-apparate charms on the place. Also, there are tables charmed to turn green when under-aged wizards touch them. (Except for one, and if you get that one, Jo will let you have one drink before booting your ass, for she supports kids like she was)
Can I Be Part of The Order of the Jobberknoll?
Date: 2011-10-02 02:29 pm (UTC)No, you don't need to wait for someone in a thread to give you an invitation, but you do need to have gotten one from someone somewhere in your backstory who had a reason to either be in The Order or have knowledge of it. Most of us will roll with whatever and whoever you decide that was. If you decide it was someone you didn't just make up, drop someone a note, and we'll make smiley faces at you.
Present proviso's --
A) Until Dinah, as leader of Dumbledor's Army, decides to make the Army inclusive with The Order, you cannot attend order meetings unless you are an adult. Which means 7th years can totally appear, while anyone else will see the dark, empty bar.
If you want to see this change, go poke Your Fearless Leader and tell her.
B) You should be on the good side. Mostly. Actually, you know, if you aren't. Just write The Order people or the mods and we'll probably want to plot horribly devious things with you. All. The. Time. But mostly just so things are straight about traitors and double agents and so many of the things already going on.

Date: 2011-10-02 02:36 pm (UTC)Your character can totally have still been there. We have Random NPC's all the time, and maybe your character sat in the back and just watched, but didn't talk that time. Wave your hands, make it work, drop someone a note and they can put you in their narration, or just mention later wherever that you did go.
We are really not crazy hardasses, made to stress you, about anything involved with anything. I mean, we gave Dean a LOL!Cat Curse on first meeting. We are here to make you laugh and smile and have a good time.
Dumbledore's Army
Date: 2011-10-02 04:32 pm (UTC)It is UNOFFICIALLY a junior chapter of the Order but also unaffiliated with the Order. Not anyone can join IC.
Anyone can join OOC, but you must be on the side of Good, if such a side exists.
All members of the real DA have taken magical vows and are under the fidelius charm (Dinah is not the secret keeper) about the goings on of the DA and the true membership list - although some members are more secret than others.
Dinah for one, trusts her Army more than the Order.
Other Wizarding Schools
Date: 2011-10-02 02:06 pm (UTC)Re: Other Wizarding Schools
Date: 2011-10-02 03:30 pm (UTC)So Salem is an all-witch magic school in Massachusetts. It's brother school is Arkham Mass, all-wizards. It's... special.
There's a lot of fleshing out here that needs to be done, but think old school American boarding with a good great helping of Umbridge-level crazy. Theory is stressed in this school with little to no practical application. Punishments come swift and unnecessarily severe, always including some form of physical pain. Think it's weird to have a Puritanical magic school? Don't point it out in History of Magic.
Seriously. Don't.
(other stuff goes here, but I wanted to get this down soon. I've been told by certain haven't-apped-yet-either players that this Arkham is not based on Gotham's, but on Lovecraft's work. Never having read Lovecraft myself, I'm hoping there's less tentacle-rape and Old Gods involved, but hey - who knows, right?)
Sam and Dean Winchesters are alums from this school.

Date: 2011-10-03 08:04 pm (UTC)I may have just invented the Southern AirTemple...which, you know. MAY, at one point, have hosted an entire school of monk-like wizards who specialized in wandless element manipulation.
(And I may have done this solely so Aang could air scoot. DON'T JUDGE ME!)
But, I wouldn't worry too much about the school since it was destroyed 100 years ago during a coup. And the entire order is now dead.
OR IS IT?!
*cues dramatic music.*

Date: 2011-10-02 08:35 pm (UTC)- SO, Ozai is a Public Figure, in that he has spent lots of time working towards his eventual appointment to Headmaster, but he also has many, many contacts at the Ministry. Who are not exactly, entirely, on the side of Right.
Well. From the Order's point of view they're not, anyway. From their own points of view, they're doing the right thing by the world, and Ozai is the man to lead them.
The Ministry is a dangerous place to say the wrong thing these days.

From:Aurors
Date: 2011-10-02 08:39 pm (UTC)There are a handful of ~superhero~ Aurors, code names and everything. Not much is known about them. They're like the 007s of the Aurors really. Aurors will know some names; the general public might know some code names; the code-name-bearers themselves work in absolute silence and don't say anything.
Many in the Auror administration are following the general trend at the Ministry - which is to follow the lead of Ozai/OtherBadPeople etc. In that diplomatic we're-doing-this-for-your-own-good way.
If you happened to be an Auror and a Jobberknollian, for example, you would be stuck between two different difficult places to be.

Date: 2011-10-10 05:27 pm (UTC)My current working idea is that Madrassa is a spying/'information gathering' organization with a bent towards making sure that a) the current trend towards the ostracizing of purebloods is stemmed, and b) the safety of powerful magical locations such as Hogwarts are maintained by providing assistance to those would could enforce that protection.
Inara has little to no interaction with the overall structure of how House Madrassa works, beyond those who participate in the front organization of House Madrassa as an escort service based out of London, and the assignments she receives individually.
If people have propositions (heh) about either finding out what Inara's affiliation is cover-story wise, hiring her, or want to take advantage of the spying facet of things, please let me know. :)
